The History of Memorial Park
The Beginning
In 1989, Arcadia acquired 54 acres that would become home to Memorial Park, a multi-purpose recreational facility featuring an aquatic center, sports courts, picnic areas, the Kids Kingdom playground, the Millennial Amphitheater, and a community pavilion equipped with the capacity to prepare 1,800 pieces of barbecued chicken simultaneously. While these amenities serve the community’s recreational needs, the park’s true heart lies in its dedication to honoring American service members and statesmen through Soldiers Walk.
The Vision
Soldiers Walk Memorial Park emerged from the vision of Ronald Wanek, Chairman of Ashley Furniture Industries, and his wife Joyce. Through the Ronald & Joyce Wanek Foundation, they became the park’s primary benefactors, transforming it into a profound tribute to American military service and leadership.
As founder of Ashley Furniture Industries in the early 1970s, Ron Wanek built what would become the world’s largest manufacturer of home furnishings and the largest furniture retail brand in North America. Ron is recognized for his commitment to community service, strong family values and diverse interests including sculpture and civic engagement.
The Legacy
Adjacent to the Millennial Amphitheater stands a memorial honoring Ronald Wanek, commissioned by his son Todd Wanek, President & CEO of Ashley Furniture Industries, Ashley employees, friends and the City of Arcadia. Unveiled as a surprise during its dedication on August 12, 2011, the memorial commemorates Ron’s 50-year legacy in manufacturing, his philanthropic contributions and his status as one of Wisconsin’s most influential industrialists.
Ashley Furniture Industries has further enhanced the park through the donation of numerous statues along Soldiers Walk, continuing the Wanek family’s commitment to preserving military history and honoring American service members.
